EWG’s Hedgehog Highways Project Team has been really busy in 2022-23. We have held habitat creation events resulting in at least 25 hibernacula, drilled over 130 holes in fences to establish hedgehog highways, and delivered educational outreach days which have been very successful at engaging and involving the community in Hanwell.
We’ve been delighted to have confirmation this week that the rehabilitated Hedgehogs released at Framfield Allotments earlier in the year have had babies. Showing that all the work to make the site, and surrounding gardens, Hedgehog friendly is paying off. The hoglet was captured on a monitoring camera, you can see the difference in size between the juvenile in the first picture and the adult in the second. The triangular structure is our cat and fox-proof feeding station.
Now the pilot has given us some valuable learning, we plan to extend the project to Acton, Northolt, and Southall.
Over the winter, we will focus on identifying appropriate sites, connecting with interested local groups and individuals, and running family-friendly habitat creation sessions. Watch this space for future announcements of how you can take part.
