Hedgehog Using A Highway

A big thank you to everyone who joined us at our recent Hedgehog habitat creation events. We held these in Northala Fields and Acton Park to kick off the second phase of the EWG Hedgehog Highways project. Both events were made possible with support from Ealing Park Rangers, Pat, Mark and Jamie.

We had over 60 people attend across both days to help us make Hedgehog homes in their local parks.

There are several ways to make Hedgehog homes ranging from simply leaving a “messy” pile of leaves in a corner to assembling timber boxes. For these homes, we used logs, mulch and woodchips to create the small habitats combined with these three steps:

  1. Dig a shallow hole in the ground and pad with mulch or woodchip.
  2. Use logs to create a hollow structure ensuring to leave a small hog-sized entrance.
  3. Completely cover the logs with the remaining mulch or woodchip.

While they won’t be used to hibernate as the weather warms up, Hedgehogs can use them to rest during the day or as a summer nest. However, even if Hedgehogs don’t move in, plenty of other wildlife will!

Watch out for the rescheduled habitat creation in Southall Park in our Facebook Group, Page and website in the autumn.

We’re making great progress supporting our local hedgehogs, and we’d like to be able to do even more. So we’d love to hear from you if you’re within Acton, Hanwell, Northolt and Southall, to join the following teams:

Hole drilling team

Get your hands on some power tools to assist in drilling holes for free in garden fences to create a connected network of gardens for the Hedgehogs to roam.

Community engagement team

Undertake outreach by engaging with residents about the importance of Hedgehogs and getting them signed up for our free hole drilling service.

Hedgehog Highways project team

Support the main project team with your creativity and skills by attending a monthly online meeting and helping to coordinate various activities and events.

We know you love Hedgehogs as much as we do, so please help the team create new habitats and corridors for Hedgehogs to once again thrive in Ealing.

If you can volunteer to support any of these teams, please complete the short Google Form below.
