We’re going to have a fun habitat management task morning, led by Sean and Ranger Carl Smith, improving the pond in the meadow behind Mayfield Primary school for the returning frog population that spawn there each year.

The pond is slowly becoming overshaded by pioneer Willow saplings, and the banks and shallows often get trampled and churned up by dogs going in for a splash, destroying the habitat not only for tadpoles but lots of other pond life too.

So, a three pronged approach, we will:
1) Coppice most of the Willows this year
2) Use the arisings to create some dead hedge barriers to discourage dogs from entering
3) Erect some friendly signs for dog owners to alert them to the sensitive nature of this precious pond.

It’ll be good fun, not too physically demanding, and a little muddy so dress appropriately. All tools and gloves provided. All ages welcome, under 18s accompanied by an adult.

Meet at the entrance to the meadow next to Mayfield Primary, High Lane, Hanwell at 10am, W7 3RT. We might even see a Kingfisher if we are lucky!
