Framfield Allotments Host Hedgehogs’ New Life In The Wild
Our Hedgehogs are in trouble!
The Hedgehog is not only considered a gardener’s best friend, they’ve also won our hearts being Britain’s favourite UK animal, but they are in serious decline!
In the UK, Hedgehogs have declined 95% since the 1950s and in 2020 Hedgehogs were classed as vulnerable to extinction.
What happened?
- Intensive agriculture that lacks biodiversity robs them of their food.
- Urban areas are built on, paved over and fragmented behind garden walls.
- Increased traffic means many more die on the roads every year
How can you help hedgehogs?
- Create hedgehog friendly gardens and allotments
- Connect your gardens with a hedgehog hole and map it on the Big Hedgehog Map
- Talk to your neighbours and become a hedgehog champion
- Report Hedgehog sightings to us using the form below or to Greenspace Information for Greater London (GIGL).
- Join our volunteer team!
- Hole drilling team – We’re looking for a small team of 2-3 people to help us connect gardens near Northala Fields, Northolt. Training provided. Contact us now if you’d like to help wildlife and get your hands on some power tools!
- Hedgehog Highways project team – Support the main project team with your enthusiasm and skills by helping to run and coordinate various activities and events.

EWG Hedgehog Highways Project
EWG is running a project to try and boost Hedgehog numbers in Ealing. Our aims are to:
- Educate residents about how to be Hedgehog friendly
- Encourage residents to connect as many gardens as possible
- Create suitable habitat for Hedgehogs
What have we achieved so far?
Our funding is tied to delivery in specific parts of the borough: Hanwell, Acton, Southall and Northolt.
- ZSL London Hogwatch camera trap surveys in 8 parks and 3 allotments across Ealing
- 7 habitat creation events
- Educational & awareness raising activities at schools and community events
- Training for local rangers
- Connecting gardens in Hanwell
- 2025 ZSL report confirming presence of hedgehogs in Northala Fields and Southall’s Dormers Wells and Glade Lane Canalside Park.
Coming up in 2025
The following activities are planned for areas in close proximity to Northolt’s Northala Fields and Southall’s Dormers Wells and Glade Lane Canalside Park.
- Recruit a small team of volunteer hole drillers
- Continue with awareness raising activities
- Offer educational talks to local schools and community groups
- Offer a free hole drilling service to create a network of gardens in selected streets
